GET CAUGHT READING!

Celebrate literacy every day.

D.E.A.R. stands for "Drop Everything and Read." It is a national celebration designed to remind families to make reading a priority activity in their lives. April 12 is also the birthday of children's author, Beverly Cleary. Her lovable characters, Ramona and Beezus, are favorites of a new generation of readers.

When I was a classroom teacher, my students and I loved D.E.A.R. time.

It was a special quiet time for us to read books of our own choice.

I must admit that there were times when I was tempted to mark papers or write lesson plans during the 30 minutes.

However, I knew how important it was to be a reading role model for my students.

Parents, you have the opportunity to adopt D.E.A.R. time at home. When your child sees you reading, it can motivate them to read. I encourage you to take advantage of this opportunity. Remember, you are your child’s first reading role model.

For more parenting tips, join the next Ten Steps to Reading Success Parent Workshop on Sunday, April 24 at 4 pm.

Until next time, I wish you....
