Kathryn P. Carter, M.Ed. - also known as KP Carter, The Literacy Whisperer – is a lifelong educator. During her 35-year career in education, she served children, colleagues and families in various roles including Director of Language Arts and Testing, Reading Specialist, and Supervisor.

Currently, Kathryn is a TEDx speaker, education consultant, award winning children's author, and creator of the Rockstar Reader Academy. Her goal is to elevate, energize and encourage children to become rockstar readers. She is the author of the Lizzie B. Hayes children’s book series about a precocious eight-year-old and three generations of her colorful family. The historical fiction series is just right for children ages 8-12. Her Rockstar Reader Academy is designed to meet the literacy needs of children, parents, and school districts. She is available to speak about children's literacy development and tips for aspiring authors.

Throughout her career, Kathryn:

  • provided English Language Arts district oversight

  • designed curriculum and programs based on standards and best practices

  • developed student-centered instructional methods

  • created programs to disrupt literacy gaps

From an early age, Kathryn knew she would be a teacher. She majored in education at Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. Kathryn graduated with honors and earned a B.A.  After graduation, she spent an entire year as a per diem substitute teacher. The experience fueled Kathryn’s passion for children’s literacy. She was determined to further her education and improve students' academic outcomes. Kathryn applied for and was awarded a full fellowship in the Reading Specialist program at Kutztown State University in Kutztown, Pennsylvania where she earned a M.Ed.

She is the mother of two amazing adult sons. A native of New Jersey, she currently resides in North Carolina. Her days are filled with writing books, tutoring children, conducting author visits, and supporting parents and school districts.  Kathryn's home library is filled with mysteries, children’s books, science fiction, professional literature, and biographies. Swimming, dancing, and playing her viola help Kathryn maintain an active lifestyle. Volunteering with her church and sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc©., brings joy to Kathryn’s life.

My goal is to elevate, encourage and energize children on the journey to become rockstar readers!
