10 STEPS TO READING SUCCESS - STEP 3

10 STEPS TO READING SUCCESS

STEP 3. MAINTAIN A PRINT RICH ENVIRONMENT

“Whether rich or poor, residents of the United States or China, illiterate or college graduates, parents who have books in the home increase the level of education their children will attain.”

MARIAH EVANS, UNIVERSITY OF NEVADA, RENO

Fill your home with print of all types of print to support your child on the journey to becoming a competent, confident reader. This emphasizes reading, speaking, and writing for all students. Besides reading books, include print from various sources such as cereal box nutrition facts, directions to video games, as well as magazine and newspaper articles. Encourage your child to write and talk about what they read.

Create a cozy, comfortable spot to make reading exciting and fun for your child. First, you may need

to roll up your sleeves and declutter a space in your home. Be sure to let your child help, get creative with simple decorations, and just have fun!

Next week, I’ll explore Step 4 – Build Stamina. When students read without distraction for extended periods of time, it builds stamina.

Until then, be filled with love, laughter, and literacy!
