How Family Literacy Month Began

ree

Family Literacy Month is celebrated every November to recognize the vital role families play in building strong reading and learning habits. The celebration began in 1994 when the National Center for Families Learning (NCFL) established it to bring national attention to the importance of family engagement in literacy.

The NCFL believed that literacy success is not just about teaching children to read, it also depends on involving parents and caregivers in the process. When parents model reading, share stories, and encourage conversation, children develop stronger literacy skills and a lifelong love of learning.

November 1, 1994, was first designated as a daylong celebration and grew to a month-long focus on the importance of reading to strengthen family bonds and support academic achievement. Schools, libraries, and community groups often host book drives, reading challenges, and family literacy events to encourage participation.

Family Literacy Month continues to serve as a reminder that literacy is more than a classroom skill. It thrives when it is nurtured at home, in daily conversations, and through shared reading experiences. By setting aside time in November, families can celebrate learning together and build habits that will last a lifetime.
